This map showcases the distribution of public high schools in Salt Lake County, Utah, with a focus on accessibility. It features three-mile buffer zones around each school to assess coverage and identify areas where students may have limited access to high schools.Â
Creation Process:
GIS data in ArcGIS Pro was used, integrating public high school locations and Census Block data within Salt Lake County.
A three-mile buffer was generated around each high school location to visually represent the service areas and accessibility.
Census Blocks were overlaid to show the surrounding residential areas, highlighting regions well-served by nearby schools and those that may need improved access.
An Imagery basemap was used to provide geographical context, with roads and other key features clearly visible.
Standard cartographic elements like the title, inset map, scale bar, north arrow, and legend were added to enhance map interpretation.
Visual Details:
Public high schools are marked with distinct symbols, and their three-mile buffer zones are shaded in blue, visually demonstrating the extent of their accessibility.
The red outline marks the boundary of Salt Lake County, drawing clear spatial limits for the analysis.
Inset and detailed view maps provide additional context, showing the position of Salt Lake County within the state of Utah and a close-up of Midvale, emphasizing an area that is not covered by the 3 mile buffer zone.
The legend clarifies symbology, making the map easy to understand, and underscores the relationship between educational facilities and population distribution.
